Saint Demetrios Church In Bloom
Saint Demetrios church has exploded with life and colour this year! Anyone visiting the church cannot miss all the new flowers that greet you as you approach the front steps of the church. But wait, this is just the beginning as we plan to build upon this and create a small garden to the side of the church along Town Road which can be used by parishioners and visitors.
This venture all started when Fr. Evangelos decided that the three existing stone ornamental pots at the steps of the church which had dead plants in each and were being used more as ashtrays and litter bins had to be brought back to life and from there other pots of flowers followed, then more and the results can be seen below.
Parishioners have welcomed this burst of colours as well as local residents living in the neighbourhood, as they bring smiles to the faces of people.
Fr. Evangelos plans to have hanging baskets next year to the front and side of the church, as well as garden chairs and an area for people to have their photographs taken for weddings or baptisms. Furthermore, the church has received it’s first kind donation towards creating this garden area by Androulla and her family who have kindly donated an ornamental garden chair (as seen here), which will be placed outside on the next stage of the development of the garden.
The former headmistress of the Greek School, Soula, has also kindly donated pots which have been used to plant new olive trees (that have olives now growing on them but not quite enough yet to produce olive oil).
If you wish to help towards creating this garden then please feel free to contact Fr. Evangelos who welcomes any gifts.
The ultimate goal is to have our church welcome you with a flurry of colour and fragrance, just like many monasteries do in Greece and Cyprus, and have somewhere were you can sit and chat with friends after the service, or even with a priest over a cup of coffee.
Please return to the website to see how Fr. Evangelos is progressing with creating our own little piece of heaven in Edmonton.
Thank you for your kind support and God Bless
