On the morning of Sunday 17th May 2015, by God’s grace a unique event took place in the history of our Community: a service was conducted by His Eminence Archbishop Gregorios of Thyateira and Great Britain to mark the reception into St Demetrios’ Church of a cross containing three small pieces of the Precious and Holy Cross of Christ.
The cross which has been carefully and beautifully made through the donations of pious parishioners and faithful Orthodox from further afield, contains not only 3 pieces of the Holy Cross but other holy relics too, of St John the Baptist, St James the brother of the Lord, St George the Trophy-bearer, of the Holy Martrys of St Savvas monastery and the New Martyr Philoumenos of Jacob’s well. It also contains stone from Golgotha, the place of the Crucifixion, as well as a piece from the stone that was used to enclose the tomb of Christ.
This exceptional event took several years to come to fruition. It began with the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Gregorios, who, with a letter on behalf of the parish, petitioned His Beatitude the Patriarch of Jerusalem for a piece of the Sacred Cross of Christ. The relic was delivered into the hands of Protopresbyter Kyprianos Constantinides in Jerusalem, in August 2014, who brought it to London. Fr Kyprianos meticulously designed and took responsibility for the making of the cross in which the precious relics are now installed and it reflects with its outer splendour the holiness of the sacred objects hidden within it for the protection and blessing of all who come to bow down in veneration.
